St. Croix is one of the islands that make up the United States Virgin Islands. It has a past filled with extraordinary history. Each of them played an important role in the island’s past and influence over the native Arawak and Carib people. One can experience St. Croix through its arts, crafts and music. There are several different festivals and cultural events celebrated throughout the year.
The unique culture of St. Croix is often seen through their festivals and special dances. Mocko Jumbies is a popular dance featuring stilt dancers that are thought to chase away evil spirits. The stilt dancers are combined with reggae, calypso, steel pan bands and salsa music, making this truly captivating, both through sight and sound. The early settlers’ tradition of dancing from one estate to the next, the Quadrille dance mixed with quelbe or scratch music has now evolved into an organized parade the whole town can enjoy. You’ll hear the sounds of drums, flutes, trumpets and gourds that are scratched and used for percussion sounds.
If you like being in the sun’s rays and enjoy the outdoors there are plenty of parks and beaches throughout the island of St. Croix. Visit the Can Bay Beach located on the North shore or Mermaid Beach with its beautiful white sand. Cramer’s park is great for camping and picnicking.
